Skin Rejuvenation is the process of making skin appear younger and healthier. Skin rejuvenation relies on several strategies including the use of topical skin products, skin-healthy nutrition and the use of lasers and light-based technologies.
Youthful skin is tighter and has fewer wrinkles and brown spots, and less redness and rough texture. While skin care products such as Retin-A, sunscreens and antioxidant formulations are important to maintaining younger looking skin, they cannot provide the dramatic improvements that lasers and light-based devices offer. These devices offer improvements many times more powerful than topical skin cremes. Lasers and other light-based devices work by targeting specific problems in the skin, while minimizing any "collateral damage" to the other layers. This measured degree of injury results in a renewal process by the body, causing the skin to appear younger, fresher and healthier.
Types of Lasers and Light-Based Devices
1. The gentle type of device (non-ablative). These devices do not cause significant injury to the surface layers of the skin and therefore recovery is quick and easy. They pass through the upper layers of the skin to target problems below the surface of the skin, such as age spots, broken capillaries, and unwanted hair. They also stimulate new collagen and tighten the skin. These devices are popular because they are safe and easy and have limited or no downtime. Because they are more gentle, multiple treatments are sometimes required. Ridenour Plastic Surgery owns the following gentle (non-ablative devices):
Clear and Brilliant Laser Forma RF
Fraxel Dual Laser ThermiSmooth RF
Lumecca IPL Thermage CPT
Diolaze Hair Removal Blu-U Light
Vbeam Perfecta QS Nd:YAG (RevLite)
2. The more aggressive type of device (ablative) This type of laser is intentionally more aggressive and often produces more heat toward the surface of the skin. Injury at the surface of the skin results in light scabbing, crusting and/or oozing of the skin requiring the application of bland ointment and a more protracted period of healing. These more aggressive devices are used to treat more advanced aging of the skin such as extensive loss of elasticity and deep lines and wrinkles. Despite being more aggressive, improvements in design, such as fractionation, have made these devices extremely safe with complete healing taking less than one week. Because they are more aggressive, these procedures yield maximal results with a single treatment. Ridenour Plastic Surgery owns the following aggressive (ablative devices):
Fraxel re:pair laser
